Growing magic mushrooms

Grow Report Psilocybe cubensis "Huautla"

At the end of last year, in our online training on the topic of "Hallucinogenic Mushrooms", we also talked about cultivation and accompanied it in the laboratory. We have accompanied the process from the production of the nutrient substrate to the harvest and would like to offer you some insights here.

Day 1

The starting shot for the cultivation

Last week the time had finally come. We gave the little Psilocybe cubensis 'Huautla' a new home in different containers and started the exciting process of growing. The anticipation for the results is great and we will keep you updated step by step.

day 6

A magnificent growth

Our Psilocybe cubensis 'Huautla' obviously feel well, because their growth is simply magnificent. The first tender fruiting bodies develop from the primordia and it is fascinating to observe how fast they grow up.

day 7

The visible evolution

The small fruiting bodies have made amazing progress in just one week. The stems are visibly stretching and the caps are no longer completely enveloped by the velum universale. Nevertheless, white envelope remnants, also known as pileoblem, can be seen on their hats. We expect their development to continue even more rapidly in the coming days.

day 11

The harvest is about to begin

It's hard to believe how quickly the first magic mushrooms are ready for harvest. Just three days have passed and the first mushrooms are ready for harvest. This is especially evident in the torn stem volva (velum partiale) caused by the stretching of the caps. The remains of the stalk volva are still visible on the stalk as cuffs. The mushroom laminae are now free and will soon shed spores. Therefore, we leave the mushrooms for a while to be able to show the sporulation in more detail.

day 12

Time for the harvest

After only a week of growth, today is the big harvest day! The fruiting bodies have already shed spores neatly and the hats have begun to undulate. This wavy pattern helps the mushroom to spread its spores even more efficiently. A characteristic feature of fungi from the genus Psilocybe is the black-purple spore color, which is also used for identification. Interestingly, we used only about ~400 ml of intergrown grain spawn in each of the two approaches, resulting in surprisingly acceptable harvests.

Evaluation:

Determination of concentration and results

A question on the minds of many: What is the psilocybin content in our Psilocybe cubensis 'Huautla'? The laboratory result shows an active ingredient content of 1.13%. Note, however, that this content may vary depending on the mushroom variety and growing conditions.

Laboratory analysis is accurate, but not always practical. Therefore, we have developed a rapid test that provides similar results within 30 minutes. Using our Psilo-QTEST and a color scale, we obtain a concentration between 0.9% and 1.2% psilocybin. This is very close to the laboratory value. For even more accurate and reliable results, we recommend using our color evaluation app. This calculates the concentration based on a photo and allows for extremely accurate results.

In our blog article, we gave you an insight into the fascinating cultivation and harvesting of Psilocybe cubensis 'Huautla'. If you'd like to delve into the world of magical mushrooms for yourself, this is an exciting journey that awaits you. Stay tuned for more information and tips on growing mushrooms!
